About

The Story of Bottled Water, releasing March 22, 2010 on storyofbottledwater.org, employs the Story of Stuff style to tell the story of manufactured demand—how you get Americans to buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week when it already flows from the tap. Over seven minutes, the film explores the bottled water industry’s attacks on tap water and its use of seductive, environmental-themed advertising to cover up the mountains of plastic waste it produces. The film concludes with a call to ‘take back the tap,’ not only by making a personal commitment to avoid bottled water, but by supporting investments in clean, available tap water for all.

Our production partners on the bottled water film include five leading sustainability groups:

• Corporate Accountability International
• Environmental Working Group
• Food & Water Watch
• Pacific Institute
• Polaris Institute

http://www.localtalk2004.com/V2005/detail.php?file=1&code=s1_23102008_01

It's feel good to become myself again

Spent about one day and a half to finish this handbag, with the great help of my wonderful friend, P' Ting. Also, with the great inspiration and support from other friends.

"You can do it, you can do it." Pi Ting said. She has done making a number of handmade stuff for many years: bags, wooden box, curtain, bed cover sheet, etc. She's artist, painter, and beloved friend of mine.

Two days ago, she, her boyfriend and I went to the big market and bought some fabric, the style that I like. I fell in love at the first time with the green flowers fabric, and then I was looking for other color to fit with it. Found this yellow, not to bright and not to gray. I love it. The cost to make it doesn't expensive at all, so far I can calculate it shouldn't be more than 150 baht. My labor doesn't count, however, I'm so proud to have made it.

Started designing, cutting, sewing, since Tuesday afternoon until late at night. While I was sewing and watching a DVD of Jason Mraz's Beautiful Mess concert at the same time, my heart thought of someone. I wish he could be with me, reading book, doing whatever he likes, and I was sewing and we were talking. I love thinking of that scene, warm and lovely moment.

Well, in reality, it was only me and two cats beside me. I was sewing my beautiful bag, and my tear began to drop. I missed him so much...

Til 2am in the morning, I was so tired then go to bed. A few hours later, I woke up and I knew the bag waited for me to care and love, and touch. A few hours more on Wednesday, I completed the bag which I will carry around with me all the time. P'Ting doesn't only help me to make a bag but also give me a new friend, a new buddy in my life.

Ultimately, I feel so good afterall. I'm feeling that I became myself again. Once long time ago, I loved to make myself stuff but with my study and my busy schedule, and other boring reasons -- I gave up to let myself enjoy the time of my eyes looking at my two hands to create stuff. Now I feel like I'm back! I feel so good. Thanks to my friends, thanks to the kitties to be with me through the night. I wasn't alone in this house, not either in this world.

Life is like Chocolate...

"Life is like chocolate, you never know what you are going to eat until you open it." Forest Gump, 1994 ---

Good Morning Monday,

7am: Waking up this morning from a weird dream. "Driving in the US army truck among the civil war or something like chaos, crowded, traffic, and bombs... strange." Then, Lumpy 'Miew Miew Miew...' woke me up. Walking down the stairs, giving her a breakfast, and also for Talay. 'Miew Miew Miew, thank you...'

After the strange dream, and waking up early, I started to think of something nice, friendly, and delicious.

'Cake Masterpiece' is the cake and coffee shop nearby my dorm in Bangkok. There is yummy cake and decent taste of coffee. However, too far from me to go at the moment. (Wondering that Cat can eat chocolate or not, I don't think so.)

Chiang Mai today's weather is not so bad, cold in the morning, hot in the middle of the day, then maybe rain in the evening. Three seasons in one day. Well, there is a few delicious cake shops around town, though, I should go and have some. Chocolate cake and brownie are my favorite.

"Put 'eat chocolate' in your 'to do' everyday, and eat some then you'll accomplish at least one thing everyday."

"Nothing is better then a good friend...except a good friend with chocolate."

"If you can't eat all your chocolate, you can keep it in the freezer, but if you can't eat all your chocolate, what's wrong with you?"

"Chocolate is better than a therapy, and you don't need an appointment." :o)

These quotes are taken from the wall in the Cake Masterpiece, Cake and Coffee Shop (close to National Stadium, Suphachalasai).

The owner who himself told me that baking cake is his job but he likes drawing and painting so much more. But it that can't really make money.

Also, on the wall the message I love is:

"Life like that, made of defeat and victories. We always hurt the one we love, in someways."

"Coffee and love has one thing alike, you need it although it felt a bitter taste in your mouth."

"Some said 'the journey itself is more important than the destination."

"Before I met you, I met God. I asked him for a flowers, he gave me a big garden. So I asked him for a river, he gave me an ocean. Then I asked him for an angel, and he gave me you. To the world you may be just somebody, but to me you are the world."

And.... "Sometimes love come for you to learn, not to own." ...

The Beauty of Contradictory (2)

Recently, Mae Sai became a very well-known town for all tourists about crossing the border for shopping, and to frankly say there is only a few people to go to border for enjoying the border town and plural cultures scenery. Only a few numbers of tourists passing through Mae Sai and Tachilek in order to go to visit Chiang Tung or Kengtung (in Burmese), the principal town of Kengtung Township.

Since China’s ‘open-door policy’ opens the country to foreign investment and encourages development of a market economy and private sector (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/1288392.stm), and joined the World Trade Organization in December 2001, China has expanded their product market more and more and impacted the global economy and also concerned the Western country as the United States in term of a patent or an intellectual property right a great deal.

While Thai government has closely historical relationship with the US government, the intention to negotiate the US-Thailand Free Trade Agreement has been going for over six years without any success. As the result of negotiations have attracted strong opposition and concern among many Thai social movements, farmers to people with HIV/AIDS. (http://www.bilaterals.org/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=19) that concern about intellectual rights would affect the right to access medicine.

Today if you go to watch the movie in the theatre, you will see Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva talks to the Thai people that buying illegal movie DVDs or online downloading are serious crime, and ruin a reputation of Thailand. The anti-pirate DVDs campaign often occurs in the radio and television as well. Still, the border trade and economy in Mae Sai and Tachilek are blooming and seemingly going well. There are hundreds thousand tourists visiting the border a year. Many people buy the imitation brand product which is cheaper, more affordable, looking nice, and feeling like they can enjoy the modernity as like as the rich people. At this point, I think the border trade bloom at Mae Sai and Tachileck towns that because of classes and modernity value as well.

In conclusion, we can see and much agree that urbanization are from the economic development and trade growth, and its system has both evolved organically by the human needs, and plus modernity values. Also it needs some certain kinds of governmental and trans-governmental management and regulations, and the last one it is the global economy trend of labour, and that can be explained by the economic growth in China, where there are lots of informal employment which contributes about half of total urban employment and trends to rise even more. One more point is that how interesting it is to look about informal economy, dynamics of social struggles and political bargaining, when we look at the relationship between China, the United States and Thailand.

While Thai government tries to promote anti-pirate or illegal products, and attempts to resume negotiating FTA with the US, Thai government closes the eyes at the border town and takes benefit from shoppers, tourists, traders, and other economic activities. At the same time that we all are able to enjoy the variety of movies and music in the American or Western culture contexts from all cheap DVDs and CDs which are produced in China. Things that illegal in Thailand, but you can cross the border and buy in Burma, then you can carry through back to Thailand with no charge.

The US economically sanctions Burmese junta that abuses human rights in the country, on the other side Burmese economy is still growing with lot of investment and financial support from Thailand, Singapore and China. Moreover, the world aims to blaming China’s developmental project and economic growth on resources extraction, but we are happy to consume the cheap goods from China. What a contradiction we have been living in. What a question that we are laying on, and I am not sure whether we have a solid answer for that.

Mae Sai-Tachilek: A Series of food vendors

A few months ago, I visited my hometown, Chiang Rai. Got a chance to travel to Mae Sai district, as I wrote about this city and the town in Burma side - Tachilek in another story in this blog. Many things have changed, however, I found the charm of these border cities is the food vendors. Taking their photos as like capturing some of the feeling between them and their interactive with the towns and the tourists are something I can hardly explain. Still, very interesting and these photos telling many different stories.
